Trails For All

Dr. Nicole's Why

Dr. Nicole Retland founded the DC Go-Go Trails Collective because she believes every child deserves the opportunity to safely explore their community, connect with nature, and create lasting memories outdoors.

Growing up in Denver, Colorado, Dr. Nicole had a trail behind her childhood home. Some of her favorite memories were made there, racing her grandfather, parents, and brother.

Years later, Dr. Nicole set out to create similar memories with her three nieces and nephew. The kid’s goal was simple: visit as many parks as possible while walking from Southwest, DC to their grandparents' home East of the River. Along the way, they played at the Navy Yard, enjoyed ice cream, explored sections of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, and spent time at the Pirate Ship Playground.

They wanted to keep going.

Dr. Nicole wanted that too.

But when they reached I-295 and several busy roadways, she knew it wasn't safe. Instead of finishing the journey on foot, they ended their adventure in an Uber.

That moment stayed with her.

Dr. Nicole realized that too many families East of the River lack safe, convenient connections to parks, trails, nature, and everyday destinations. She founded the DC Go-Go Trails Collective to help change that.

Her vision is simple: create safe, connected trails and green spaces that help people of all ages and abilities access the places where they live, learn, work, play, and belong.
